The highly sought after Bay Area makeup artist works with celebrities, top commercial directors and photographers, high end corporate clients and popular TV shows. Her approach to makeup: "I once heard Japanese gardening described as 'carefully manicured nature,' and that is an aesthetic that I love. It's about grooming and enhancing natural beauty."
Kris grew up in Oregon, where her artistic gifts were recognized at a young age. With her parents' blessing she began attending college art classes at age 15, honing her skills in portraiture, figure drawing and anatomy, and was honored with awards for artistic achievement. A love of the culinary arts led Kris to become a Pastry Chef, and she baked her way through college, studying Fine Arts and Graphic Design. "Makeup Artistry is not that different from being a Pastry Chef: I must be organized. Quality ingredients are lovingly mixed together. Knowing when to add more, and when to stop are key. There is a magic and chemistry to both. It's got to be fresh! My love of art, nature, beauty, healing arts and creative collaboration all come together when I do makeup." In recent years she has had the pleasure of returning to the kitchen as Makeup Artist for many of the best Celebrity Chefs on The Food Network.
In addition to doing makeup in the Bay Area, Kris managed a photography studio where she manually retouched prints and murals, oversaw a custom lab, and curated a historic archive of large format glass negatives and photos from the turn of the century. She appreciates history and her historic research and period makeup skills can be seen in movies like Francis Ford Coppola's "Jack" (Marilyn Monroe and Elvis), "The Joy Luck Club," "Patch Adams," and the PBS movie, "Seeing In The Dark," which she made 1750's period hairpieces for. She enjoys restoring antique devotional art, mainly colonial carved wooden 'santos,' making the worn faces serene and beautiful again. Always an art student, Kris went to Burbank to take master classes in airbrush makeup for high definition, and has been the requested makeup artist on numerous HD shoots.
Kris' vibrant spirit, calm demeanor and professionalism help put people at ease, and everyone that sits in her chair is given star treatment. She speaks Spanish and has been a member of IATSE local 706 Makeup Artists' and Hairstylists' Union since 1995. Kris and her husband Ernesto live near the Napa Valley.
"If you can dream it, you can do it."
